The purpose of Taunton East Development Trust is to make a positive impact on the daily lives and futures of both local residents and volunteers. We do this by improving self-respect, self-confidence, and quality of life, whilst also providing the opportunities for personal development to maximise potential
We want to create a thriving community which can not only self-sustain, but also continue to grow over time.
How we are helping
Taunton East is one of the most economically and socially deprived areas in the whole of the South West. With high unemployment, poor levels of education, and social disruption, local agencies struggle. But the community is proud, and Taunton Link aims to build on that. By providing advice, support, opportunities, and activities, Taunton Link aims to improve the daily lives & confidence of the whole community.
Link Centre
A community hub that provides support services and activities for local residents. It offers sign-posting to local council authorities and agencies, and skills workshops. There are regular social events, as well as activity days for children during the summer school holidays. There are also bigger events for the whole family. By creating a hub, it delivers opportunities to connect and support one another.
This traditional corner shop is delivered by the community, for the community. Managed by the same person for over 30 years, local resident volunteers support the day-to-day running of the shop, ensuring that it reflects the needs and values of the community. Profits from the provision of everyday items on your doorstep go directly back into the charity to cover broader running costs
Link Power provides the hard-working volunteers a sense of purpose and increased self-confidence, whilst developing work-place skills. It provides support to less physically-able and elderly members of the community who need help around the home. Council initiatives have seen Link Power delivering services into the wider community, generating much needed income to sustain the charity over time.
Volunteering gives me a purpose to get up every morning. I have been here for years and love my work. I am just repaying the faith that the Link Centre team have shown in me

We have nothing like this where I live. I was not sure about coming because of the area's reputation, but it is much better than I thought it would be

The Link Centre gave me a chance to get back on my feet. I will continue to volunteer once I am back in work. I owe them....they gave me a chance
